When Permission Is Required to Copy Copyrighted Works

Copying a copyright-protected work generally requires permission from the copyright holder, unless all conditions set by the Copyright Act are met.

General rule for copying

Under Article 21 of the Copyright Act, the author has the exclusive right to reproduce a work. Therefore, copying a copyright-protected work generally requires permission from the copyright holder. Permission is not required only when all conditions established by the Copyright Act are satisfied.
