Science Teaching Methods: Middle-School Licence Requirements
Science Teaching Methods is required for the middle-school science teaching licence in the listed programmes. This page explains its credit value, course scheduling, classification, and how its credits are treated for other teaching-licence requirements.
When Science Teaching Methods is required
Science Teaching Methods is a required course when obtaining a middle-school teaching licence. In the listed programmes, it is specifically identified as a middle-school science requirement. For the 2025 academic year in the System Design and Technology Faculty, and for the 2025 and 2026 academic years in the Engineering and Future Science Faculties, Science Teaching Methods is among the courses required only for the middle-school licence. The same middle-school science requirement is listed for the Science and Engineering Faculty at the Saitama Hatoyama Campus for the applicable academic years.
Credits, course format, and academic year
For the 2026 academic year in the Engineering Faculty at Tokyo Senju Campus, Science Teaching Methods is a four-credit, full-year lecture course offered in the second or third year. It is scheduled to open in 2026, on an alternating-year basis with Science Education Methods. For the Science and Engineering Faculty at Saitama Hatoyama Campus, the listed course is also four credits and a full-year lecture course. The 2025 listing places it in the second or third year and states that it was not offered in 2025 because it is offered in alternating years.
Required courses and credit classification
For the middle-school science teaching-methods requirement, both Science Education Methods (4 credits) and Science Teaching Methods (4 credits) must be completed. Although the table classifies the applicable course as free-choice, a note below the table states that completion is required. In the 2025 Science and Engineering Faculty listing, Science Teaching Methods is not counted as credits for an elective subject. In addition, the credits earned in Science Teaching Methods, Mathematics Teaching Methods, Technology Teaching Methods, and Education Practicum II cannot be applied to any category of credits for a high-school teaching licence other than subjects independently established by the university.
