Study Abroad Eligibility and Required Approval

Study abroad may be permitted when it is educationally beneficial, but students must complete the prescribed application procedures in advance and obtain university recognition. Special rules apply to study abroad lasting less than one year.

When study abroad may be permitted

A student may be permitted to study at a foreign university or similar institution to take its courses when the student wishes to study abroad and the study is considered educationally beneficial. This principle is supported for the 2026 Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Future Science at Tokyo Senju Campus, the 2025 Faculty of System Design and Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus, the 2025 Faculty of Engineering, Second Division, at Tokyo Senju Campus, and the 2026 Faculty of System Design and Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus.

Application and university recognition

Before studying abroad, students must complete the prescribed application procedures and have the study, or the study-abroad period, recognized as study abroad by the university. This requirement is supported for the 2025 Faculty of Science and Technology at Saitama Hatoyama Campus, the 2025 Faculty of Future Science at Tokyo Senju Campus, the 2026 Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus, the 2025 Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus, and the 2026 Faculty of Future Science at Tokyo Senju Campus.

Short-term study abroad

The study-abroad period is ordinarily one year. However, short-term study abroad lasting less than one year may be specially permitted when it is at a university or similar institution recognized by the university. This exception is supported for the 2026 Faculty of System Design and Engineering and the 2025 Faculty of Engineering, Second Division, at Tokyo Senju Campus.
