High-School Type 1 Mathematics Teaching License Requirements

This page explains the required subject-specific credits, permitted credit substitution, and mathematics education methods requirement for the high-school Type 1 mathematics teaching license.

Required specialist and education-methods credits

To obtain the high-school Type 1 mathematics teaching license, you must earn at least 30 credits from the listed subject-specific specialist courses, including all shaded courses in the table. Up to 5 of these 30 credits may be replaced with credits earned in independently established university subjects. If you use this substitution, the required number of subject-specific specialist credits is reduced by the number of substituted credits; for example, earning 5 credits in independently established university subjects reduces the specialist-course requirement to at least 25 credits. For the education-methods requirement, Mathematics Subject Education Methods is mandatory. Mathematics Subject Instruction Methods is not counted toward the required credits.
