Physics Core Subjects and Recommended Course Sequence
This guide identifies the subjects considered essential across physics fields and outlines a recommended progression from foundational to advanced courses.
Core subjects across physics fields
In the Physics Course, Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics, and Statistical Mechanics are considered essential subjects for studying any field of physics.
Recommended early courses
The recommended initial sequence is Mechanics, Electromagnetism I, and Mathematical Physics. Physics Laboratory, Science Laboratory, and Oscillations and Waves are also recommended early in the course sequence.
Progression to advanced courses
Next, students are recommended to take Physical Chemistry I, Continuum Physics, and Quantum Mechanics I and II. After understanding the fundamentals, the suggested progression is to Precision Measurement and Analysis, Statistical Mechanics I and II, Quantum Mechanics III, and Solid State Physics.
