First-Class Teaching Licence: Eligibility and Credit Requirements

For the 2025 academic year at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, this page explains the basic qualification and statutory credit requirements for first-class junior-high-school and high-school teaching licences.

Basic eligibility

The basic qualification for a first-class teaching licence is a bachelor's degree. The page states that this qualification is obtained by graduating from the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Students must also earn the prescribed credits corresponding to the type of licence they seek.

Required credits by category

The statutory minimums differ by licence type in some categories. For subjects concerning the subject area and its teaching methods, the required credits are as follows: specialized subject-area matters require 20 credits for both a junior-high-school first-class licence and a high-school first-class licence; subject teaching methods require 8 credits for a junior-high-school first-class licence and 4 credits for a high-school first-class licence; and subjects concerning the basic understanding of education require 27 credits for a junior-high-school first-class licence and 23 credits for a high-school first-class licence. In addition, the category of subjects specified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology requires 8 credits for both licence types: 2 credits in the Constitution of Japan, 2 in physical education, 2 in foreign-language communication, and 2 in mathematics, data utilization, artificial intelligence, or the operation of information devices.

Overall credit requirement

Students must meet the statutory minimum for each applicable category and earn at least 59 credits within the total shown by the table's bold border. These requirements enable students to obtain the teaching licence subject to the additional licence-specific conditions stated in the notes.
