Teaching-Licence Credit Requirements and Credit Substitutions

This page explains the total credits required for teaching-licence coursework, substitutions using university-designated courses, excluded credits, and the credits needed for category 4.

Required credits for teaching-licence coursework

For the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus in the 2025 and 2026 academic years, you must earn at least 30 credits from the listed courses, including all shaded courses. For the Second Division of the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus in the 2026 academic year, the required credits depend on the type of teaching licence being obtained.

Substituting university-designated courses

For the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus in the 2026 academic year, up to 5 of the 30 required credits may be replaced by credits from university-designated courses. The required credits from courses concerning specialized subject matters are therefore calculated by subtracting the number of university-designated course credits used from 30. For example, earning 5 credits from university-designated courses means that at least 25 credits from courses concerning specialized subject matters are required. The same substitution rule applies to the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus in the 2025 academic year: up to 5 of the 30 credits may be replaced, so 25 specialized-subject credits are required when 5 university-designated credits are used.

Credits that do not count toward the licence requirement

For the Faculty of Future Science in the 2026 academic year, courses whose credits were recognized when a student transferred between faculties, transferred between departments, or re-entered the university cannot be counted toward the requirements for obtaining a teaching licence.

Credits required for category 4

For the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Saitama Hatoyama Campus in the 2025 academic year, the category "University-designated courses" must be fulfilled using credits earned beyond the minimum required credits in category 2, "Courses concerning subjects and subject teaching methods" (including courses subject to the note), and category 3, "Courses concerning basic understanding of education and related subjects."
