Teacher-Licence Credit Requirements by Category

This page explains the statutory minimum and university-established credit requirements for teacher licences, with separate information for the Faculty of Future Science, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Engineering Division II.

Faculty of Future Science: Category 1

For the 2026 academic year at Tokyo Senju Campus, Category 1 consists of subjects specified under Article 66-6 of the Ordinance for Enforcement of the Teacher’s Licence Act. You must earn at least the minimum number of credits shown in the applicable table.

Faculty of Engineering: Credit Requirements by Category

For the 2026 academic year at Tokyo Senju Campus, the university-established credit summary is as follows:

- Category 1: 2 credits for both lower-secondary and upper-secondary licences. - Category 2 subject courses: 20 credits for a lower-secondary licence and 30 credits for an upper-secondary licence. - Category 2 teaching-method courses: 8 credits for a lower-secondary licence and 4 credits for an upper-secondary licence. - Category 3: 29 credits for a lower-secondary licence and 25 credits for an upper-secondary licence. - Category 4: 3 credits for a lower-secondary licence and a figure printed as “(5)” for an upper-secondary licence.

For the total across the thick-bordered categories, the table gives 59 statutory-minimum credits and at least 60 university-established credits for a lower-secondary Type I licence. For an upper-secondary Type I licence, it gives 59 statutory-minimum credits and at least 59 university-established credits.

For Category 4 specifically, the statutory minimum is 4 credits for a lower-secondary Type I licence and 12 credits for an upper-secondary Type I licence. The corresponding university-established amounts are 3 credits and a figure printed as “(5),” respectively.

Under the licensing law, meeting the statutory minimum for each category by graduation can satisfy the credit requirement. At this university, however, the requirement is treated as met by earning the university-established credits for Categories 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Faculty of Engineering Division II: How the Table Applies

For the Faculty of Engineering Division II at Tokyo Senju Campus, the statutory rule is that the statutory minimum number of credits shown in the table must be met for each category by graduation to obtain a teacher licence. The university also treats the requirement as met by earning the university-established subjects in Categories 1, 2, 3, and 4.

The table’s classification for whether a subject counts toward progression or graduation requirements is separate from the shaded-subject designation. Shaded subjects are mandatory for obtaining the teacher licence.
