Type I Teaching Licence: Basic Qualifications and Credit Requirements
For the 2026 academic year at Tokyo Senju Campus, Faculty of Engineering, this page explains the bachelor's degree requirement and the statutory-minimum and university-established credits for a lower-secondary or upper-secondary type I teaching licence.
Basic qualification and designated credits
The basic qualification for a type I teaching licence is possession of a bachelor's degree. The requirements distinguish between statutory-minimum credits and university-established credits. The university's stated approach is to complete its designated credits in categories 1, 2, 3, and 4 for the relevant type I licence.
Category 1: Specified subjects
For both lower-secondary and upper-secondary type I licences, each of the following four subjects requires a statutory minimum of 2 credits: Japanese Constitution, Physical Education, Foreign Language Communication, and Mathematics, Data Utilization, and Artificial Intelligence or Operation of Information Devices. The university-established subjects are common to both licence levels and are specified on the following page.
Category 2: Specialized subjects and teaching methods
For specialized matters relating to the subject, the statutory minimum is 20 credits for both licence levels. The university-established requirement is at least 20 credits for a lower-secondary type I licence and at least 30 credits for an upper-secondary type I licence.
For subject teaching methods, a lower-secondary type I licence requires 8 statutory-minimum credits and 8 university-established credits. An upper-secondary type I licence requires 4 statutory-minimum credits and 4 university-established credits.
Category 3: Foundational education courses
For courses concerning the foundational understanding of education and related areas, a lower-secondary type I licence requires 27 statutory-minimum credits and 29 university-established credits. An upper-secondary type I licence requires 23 statutory-minimum credits and 25 university-established credits.
