How to Receive a Doctoral Degree

A doctoral degree is generally awarded after completing the doctoral program’s second stage. In some cases, it may also be awarded through dissertation review and an academic ability assessment without completing that program.

Receiving a Degree by Completing the Doctoral Program

Under the Graduate School Regulations, a doctoral degree is awarded to students who complete the doctoral program’s second stage.

Receiving a Degree Without Completing the Doctoral Program

A doctoral degree may also be awarded to a person who does not complete the doctoral program’s second stage if all of the following conditions are met: the person submits a dissertation to the University, passes the dissertation review and academic ability assessment, and is recognized as having personal qualities and academic ability equivalent to or higher than those of a person who has studied in the doctoral program’s second stage for the prescribed period and earned at least the prescribed number of credits in the prescribed major subjects. This provision is based on Article 23, Paragraph 2 of the Graduate School Regulations.
