Subject-Specialist Course Requirements for Teaching Licences

This page explains which subject-specialist courses are mandatory for a teaching licence and whether they must be taken in your own department.

Courses shaded in the subject-specialist table

Courses shaded in the subject-specialist table, including courses containing general and comprehensive content, must be completed to obtain the teaching licence. This licensure requirement is separate from the course classification used for progression and graduation requirements. The rule applies to the 2025 Faculty of Future Science scope and the 2026 Faculty of System Design Engineering and Faculty of Engineering scopes.

Where to take subject-specialist courses

As a general rule, subject-specialist courses should be taken from courses offered by your own department. For shaded courses, taking the corresponding course offered by your own department is mandatory. This rule is stated for the 2025 and 2026 Faculty of System Design Engineering scopes, the 2025 Faculty of Engineering scope, the 2025 Faculty of Engineering, Second Division scope, and the 2025 Faculty of Future Science scope.
