How Self-Selected Credits Are Counted

Learn how credits become self-selected credits and the minimum number required for graduation.

How credits are counted

Self-selected credits are not earned by taking a separate category of specially designated classes. They are automatically counted from credits that exceed the minimum required for all academic-system common courses or course-specialized courses. Course-specialized courses outside the listed course requirements, including courses from other academic systems, count as self-selected credits. Academic-system common courses from other academic systems also count as self-selected credits.

For the 2026 example of a student whose main course is Mathematics and sub-course is Physics, up to 34 credits from Science academic-system common courses count as academic-system common-course credits. Credits from the 35th onward count as self-selected credits. Mathematics course-specialized courses count as main-course specialized credits up to 26 credits; credits from the 27th onward count as self-selected credits.

Minimum required for graduation

Students must earn at least 12 self-selected credits by graduation. This minimum applies to the 2025 and 2026 academic years.
