High School Teaching License Credit Requirements

This page explains the credit requirements, exemptions, optional courses, and credit calculations for obtaining a high school teaching license.

2026: Engineering Faculty at Tokyo Senju Campus

To obtain a high school teaching license, you must earn at least 30 credits from the courses listed in the table for specialized subjects related to the teaching subject. The shaded courses in that table must be included in the credits you earn.

2026: Science and Technology Faculty at Saitama Hatoyama Campus

If you are obtaining only a high school teaching license, the courses referred to as the “above three courses” are not mandatory. You do not necessarily need to complete those courses if the combined number of credits for Category 2, “Subjects Related to the Teaching Subject and Teaching Methods,” and Category 3, “Subjects Related to Fundamental Understanding of Education and Related Subjects,” reaches at least 59 credits. Teaching-method courses do not count toward the credits required for a high school teaching license.

2025: School of System Design and Technology at Tokyo Senju Campus

For a high school teaching license, you must complete all credits offered by Tokyo Denki University for the courses in Categories 1, 2, and 3. Courses in Category 4 are not mandatory, but credits earned from them may be included in the required-credit total. If you earn Category 4 courses, the number of credits required for Category 2, “Specialized Subjects Related to the Teaching Subject,” is reduced by the number of Category 4 credits you earned.
