Make-Up Examination Eligibility and Required Documents

This page explains when a make-up examination may be available, which circumstances may qualify, and what documents or procedures apply to each faculty, campus, and academic year.

2025 Faculty of Science and Technology at Saitama Hatoyama Campus

A make-up examination may be available when you miss a semester-end examination for a truly unavoidable reason. The listed qualifying circumstances include illness, the death of a relative, public transportation suspension or delay, fire or typhoon-related disaster, and another unavoidable circumstance not caused by you. The required supporting document depends on the reason: an official delay certificate for disruption within the commuting route shown on the back of your student ID; a doctor's medical certificate stating that the examination date fell within your treatment period for illness; a condolence or funeral notice for a relative's death; and the documents specified for other qualifying reasons. If illness prevented you from taking the examination, you must visit a hospital on the examination date and obtain the doctor's medical certificate to prove that you could not attend that day. You must also be able to come to campus and take the make-up examination on its scheduled date.

2026 Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus

You may apply for a make-up examination if you meet the academic-assessment eligibility requirements and have a qualifying reason for submitting a make-up examination request. The documented reasons include being completely unable to take the examination because of your own illness or injury, a critical illness or death affecting a relative within the second degree of kinship, and suspension of public transportation or a similar disruption that makes travel to campus impossible. The required evidence is a doctor's medical certificate or the university-designated medical notification for your illness or injury, a document proving the relative's critical illness or death, or a delay certificate for transportation disruption.

Application procedure for 2026 Engineering and Science and Technology students

For semester-end examinations, a make-up examination is considered only when you meet the eligibility requirements for the semester-end examination and complete the prescribed procedure within the period designated by the relevant faculty administrative office. This rule applies to the Faculty of Science and Technology at Saitama Hatoyama Campus and the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus.

Instructor decisions and other Tokyo Senju faculties

A make-up examination is not automatic after an unavoidable absence. For 2025 students in the Faculty of Systems Design and Technology and the Second Division of the Faculty of Engineering, and for 2026 students in the Faculty of Engineering, a make-up examination may be held after a request when illness or another truly unavoidable reason caused the absence. Submitting the request does not guarantee that an examination will be held; the course instructor decides whether it is necessary. A written statement of reasons is required for another truly unavoidable circumstance that was not your responsibility. You should take the examination on the designated date whenever possible.

For the Faculty of Future Science at Tokyo Senju Campus, a make-up examination may be held for a student who could not take a semester-end or midterm examination because of acute illness or another truly unavoidable circumstance, when the course instructor considers it necessary. For 2026 students in the Faculty of Future Science, submitting the make-up examination request does not guarantee that the examination will be held, because the decision rests with the course instructor. For 2026 students in the Faculty of Systems Design and Technology, the same instructor-judgment rule applies to semester-end or midterm examinations.
