Returning from a Leave of Absence
This page explains when students generally return from a leave of absence and the consequences of exceeding the permitted cumulative leave period without returning.
Maximum leave period and failure to return
For students in the 2025 academic year at the Tokyo Senju Campus, Faculty of Future Science, a student who exceeds the cumulative leave-of-absence period specified in Article 44(2) and still does not return is subject to dismissal. The same consequence applies where a student continues not to return after exceeding the cumulative leave period. For students in the 2025 academic year at the Saitama Hatoyama Campus, Faculty of Science and Engineering, the cumulative leave-of-absence period is three years; a student who exceeds three years and still does not return is dismissed.
When to return from a leave of absence
As a general rule, the return date is the beginning of a semester. This rule applies to students in the 2025 academic year at the Tokyo Senju Campus, Faculty of Future Science, and, in principle, also applies to students in the 2026 academic year at the Tokyo Senju Campus, Faculty of Engineering, Division II.
