Teaching Licence Course Requirements
This guide explains which courses count toward a teaching licence, how licence requirements differ from graduation requirements, and when courses must be taken from your own department.
Courses required for a teaching qualification
For students in the 2026 System Design Engineering Faculty at Tokyo Senju Campus, obtaining a teaching qualification requires completing courses related to the teaching profession as well as other required courses. These licence-related requirements are separate from the information covered by ordinary graduation requirements.
Licence requirements are separate from graduation requirements
For the 2025 Science and Engineering Faculty at Saitama Hatoyama Campus, the table label "Required" identifies subjects that are mandatory for the teaching licence being pursued; it does not identify subjects required for graduation. Students pursuing a middle-school or high-school licence must complete every subject marked "Required". For the 2025 System Design Engineering Faculty at Tokyo Senju Campus, shaded subjects containing general and comprehensive content are also mandatory for obtaining the licence and are distinct from the graduation-requirement classification shown in the table.
Credit requirements for a mathematics licence
For the 2026 Science and Engineering Faculty at Saitama Hatoyama Campus, students pursuing a first-class middle-school or high-school mathematics teaching licence must complete at least 1 credit from the assigned courses in each listed subject-matter category and at least 20 credits in total.
Courses that count as industrial subjects
For the 2026 Engineering Faculty at Tokyo Senju Campus, industrial-subject courses not otherwise listed are the courses whose department course-allocation table has "160 Industrial" in the teaching-licence code column. These additional courses do not contain general and comprehensive content. For the 2025 Engineering Faculty, Evening Division, at Tokyo Senju Campus, the same rule applies: industrial-subject courses other than those listed in the table are identified by "160 Industrial" in the teaching-licence code column, and they do not contain general and comprehensive content.
Taking courses from your own department
For the 2026 Engineering Faculty, Evening Division, and the 2026 Future Science Faculty at Tokyo Senju Campus, courses covering specialised subject knowledge should generally be taken from courses offered by your own department. Shaded courses in the tables are the courses containing general and comprehensive content that are mandatory for the teaching licence; these must be taken as courses offered by your own department.
