Maximum Enrollment Period

The standard maximum enrollment period is eight years. This page explains how leave of absence, transfer, and readmission affect the limit and what happens when it is exceeded.

How long you may remain enrolled

The standard maximum period of enrollment is eight years. Except for periods covered by a leave of absence, the total period of enrollment is eight years. A leave-of-absence period is not counted toward this period. For students admitted by transfer, transferred from another institution, or readmitted, the maximum period is twice the number of years they are required to be enrolled. The eight-year rule also applies to the Evening Division of the Faculty of Engineering, while students admitted by transfer or readmission are subject to the separate calculation described above.

What happens when the limit is exceeded

A student who has not graduated and exceeds the maximum enrollment period is removed from the university register. The rules describe this consequence as dismissal, expulsion, or removal from enrollment. In the standard cases described here, exceeding eight years results in this removal.

How previous enrollment is counted after a transfer

For a student who transfers to another faculty or department, all or part of the period enrolled in the previous faculty or department is counted toward the enrollment period. For students admitted by transfer under the applicable transfer provisions, all or part of the period of schooling before admission may also be counted toward the period of enrollment.
