Discretionary and Optional Elective Credits
This page explains how discretionary credits are defined, which credits may count toward graduation, the applicable credit requirements, and the limits on credits counted in this category.
Required Discretionary Credits
The graduation-credit requirements differ by academic scope. For the 2025 academic year in the Faculty of Engineering, Division II, the standard graduation-credit table requires 24 credits in courses selected and earned at the student's discretion. For the 2026 academic year in the Faculty of Engineering, four credits are required in subjects selected and earned at the student's discretion, as defined in the relevant note.
Credits That May Count as Discretionary Courses
Discretionary courses include credits earned beyond the required graduation credits in Common Education courses, including Human Sciences and English, and in Specialized Education courses. They also include credits earned through the student-exchange credit-transfer system among Tokyo Science and Engineering Universities. For the 2025 Faculty of Engineering scope, this category also includes credits earned beyond the required credits in Common Education and Specialized Education courses, credits earned in courses taken in another faculty or department other than free subjects, and credits earned through the student-exchange credit-transfer system. In Engineering Fundamentals courses, credits exceeding the required credits for department-designated courses are included.
Practical Knowledge Priority Courses
For the 2025 academic year in the Faculty of Engineering, Division II, credits earned by taking Practical Knowledge Priority courses are included among courses selected and earned at the student's discretion.
Limits and Department-Specific Treatment
Other international-student courses that are voluntarily selected and completed may be counted toward graduation requirements as discretionary completed courses, but this treatment is limited to four credits. The Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department has no category for subjects selected and earned at the student's discretion.
