How GPA Is Calculated

For the 2025 academic year, this page explains the GPA formula, which courses are excluded, and how the displayed GPA is rounded for the Faculty of Science and Technology at Saitama Hatoyama Campus.

GPA formula and excluded courses

GPA is calculated by multiplying the credits for each course by the grade points earned in that course, adding these values, and dividing the total by the credits of the courses registered for. Courses that do not count toward graduation requirements are excluded from GPA. Courses currently in progress are not included in the denominator. Courses for which credits are recognized through qualifications or similar means and that receive an R evaluation are also excluded from GPA. The displayed GPA is rounded to three decimal places: the fourth decimal place is rounded.
