Limits on Recognizing Prior Learning Credits

The recognition of credits earned before admission may be subject to a 60-credit cap and additional legal limits, depending on your faculty, academic year, and prior institution.

The 60-credit recognition limit

For new students, qualifying study completed before admission may be recognized as study completed after admission, but recognition is limited to a total of 60 credits. This 60-credit limit applies to the 2026 rules for the Faculty of Future Science, the School of System Design and Technology, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Engineering, Evening Division. For the Faculty of Engineering, eligible prior study may include study at another university or junior college, study in an advanced course at a junior college or college of technology, and other study separately specified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, when the faculty meeting considers it educationally beneficial. This recognition route does not apply to cases such as transfer or transfer admission.

Additional legal limits

Under the 2025 rules for the Faculty of Future Science, the number of previously earned credits that can be counted may also be subject to a legal upper limit. This may depend on whether the institution you previously attended had an accredited teacher-training programme.
