How the 60-Credit Recognition Cap Works
This page explains how recognized, awarded, and treated-as-earned credits are combined under the applicable rules, including the exception for transfer admission and similar cases.
The combined credit limit
Under the applicable rules, certain credits must be counted together, and the combined total may not exceed 60 credits. Depending on the provision, this includes credits treated as earned under Article 28(1) and (2), credits awarded for study under Article 29(1), and credits recognized or awarded under Article 30(1) and (2) for learning completed outside this university. In some provisions, credits recognized under Article 28(1) alone are also subject to a maximum of 60 credits.
For the 2025 Faculty of Future Science at Tokyo Senju Campus, credits awarded under Article 29 are combined with credits treated as earned under Article 28(1) and (2), with a maximum total of 60 credits.
For the 2026 Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus, the combined credits treated as earned under the preceding provision and credits awarded under the applicable provision may not exceed 60 credits. For the 2026 Faculty of Systems Design and Technology at the same campus, credits awarded under Article 29(1), together with credits treated as earned under Article 28(1) and (2), may not exceed 60 credits. The total credits treated as earned under Article 28(1) in that faculty may not exceed 60 credits.
For the 2026 Faculty of Engineering, Second Division, at Tokyo Senju Campus, credits awarded for study under the preceding provision, combined with credits treated as earned under the preceding article's paragraphs 1 and 2, may not exceed 60 credits.
Credits from outside the university and the transfer exception
For credits covered by Article 30(1) and (2) that were not earned at this university, the total is generally combined with credits recognized under Article 28(1) and (2) and Article 29(1). Except in cases such as transfer admission or transfer between institutions, this combined total may not exceed 60 credits.
This rule applies to the 2025 Faculty of Engineering at Saitama Hatoyama Campus, the 2025 Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus, the 2025 Faculty of Future Science at Tokyo Senju Campus, the 2025 Faculty of Systems Design and Technology at Tokyo Senju Campus, and the 2026 Faculty of Science and Technology at Saitama Hatoyama Campus. The same type of transfer-related exception is also stated for the 2025 Faculty of Engineering, Second Division, at Tokyo Senju Campus.
For the 2025 Faculty of Systems Design and Technology at Tokyo Senju Campus, credits treated as earned or awarded under Article 30(1) and (2) for learning outside this university, combined with credits recognized under Article 28(1) and (2) and Article 29(1), are limited to 60 credits except in cases such as transfer admission or transfer between institutions. The equivalent rule applies to the 2025 Faculty of Engineering at Saitama Hatoyama Campus and the 2025 Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus.
