Recognition of Credits and Learning Completed Before Admission

Credits from previous university or junior college study, and certain other pre-admission learning, may be recognized after admission when the relevant faculty body considers the learning educationally beneficial. The applicable rules differ by faculty, academic year, and admission type.

What prior study or learning may be recognized

Credits earned before admission for courses taken at another university or junior college may be recognized as credits earned through courses at Tokyo Denki University. This includes credits earned as a non-degree course student. In the 2026 Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Senju Campus, the 2026 Faculty of Science and Technology at Saitama Hatoyama Campus, and the 2025 Faculty of Engineering at Saitama Hatoyama Campus, recognition may be granted when the faculty council considers the credits educationally beneficial. In the 2025 Faculty of Future Science and the 2025 Faculty of Engineering, recognition is likewise based on the faculty meeting's judgment of educational benefit.

For the 2026 Faculty of Future Science and the 2026 Faculty of Systems Design and Technology, potentially recognizable prior learning also includes study in an advanced course at a junior college or college of technology, and other learning separately specified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Such learning may be treated as study completed at this university and may receive credits when the faculty meeting considers it educationally beneficial.

Other pre-admission learning covered by the applicable study provision may also be treated as coursework at this university and awarded credits when the relevant faculty body considers it educationally beneficial.

Rules for different admission types

Some provisions specifically concern new entrants other than students admitted by transfer or transfer enrollment. Under the 2026 Faculty of Future Science provision, this category includes pre-admission university or junior college credits, study in an advanced course at a junior college or college of technology, and other officially specified learning, when the faculty meeting considers it educationally beneficial. The 2026 Faculty of Engineering provision likewise states that its new-entrant prior-credit recognition rules exclude cases such as transfer admission and transfer enrollment. The 2025 Faculty of Engineering, Second Division, provision also identifies new entrants other than transfer or transfer-enrollment students when describing potentially recognizable pre-admission university or junior college credits.

Separately, a 2026 Faculty of Engineering provision states that the stated prior-credit recognition rules apply to transfer students, including students transferring with a bachelor's degree. These admission-type statements are presented under different provisions and should not be combined into one universal rule.
