First-Class Architect Exam Eligibility and Experience Requirements

This page explains exam eligibility, practical-experience requirements, and graduate-study routes for becoming a registered First-Class Architect.

Exam eligibility and registration requirements

For the 2025 academic year at the School of Future Science on the Tokyo Senju Campus, graduates of the Department of Architecture are eligible to take the First-Class Architect examination. After graduation, registration as an architect requires the prescribed period of practical experience and passing the examination.

Experience recognition through graduate study

At the School of Future Science on the Tokyo Senju Campus, the graduate Architecture programme offers a curriculum in which completing the designated courses can result in recognition of two years of practical experience. For the 2026 academic year, graduates of the Department of Architecture can also obtain recognition of two years of practical experience by studying a specialized field in graduate school, earning the required credits, and completing the master's programme.

Credit-based practical-experience requirements

For the 2026 academic year at the School of Science and Technology on the Saitama Hatoyama Campus, the required practical experience depends on the combined number of credits in categories (a) and (b) for the First-Class Architect category. With 40–49 credits, four years of practical experience are required at registration. With 50–59 credits, three years are required at registration. With 60 or more credits, the required practical experience at the examination stage is zero years. The same source states that the requirement is zero years at the examination stage for the Second-Class and Wooden Architect categories when the combined total is 40 or more credits.
