This guide explains recommended credit targets, when to choose your main and secondary courses, and how to use curriculum and progression tables when planning your courses.

Recommended credit targets

For the 2026 academic year, students in the Mechanical Engineering study model at the Saitama Hatoyama Campus of the Faculty of Science and Technology are encouraged to take courses in a balanced way and aim to earn at least 80 credits by the end of the second year. By the end of the third year, aiming for at least 120 credits is desirable so that the fourth year can be devoted to graduation research. Earning about 40 credits each academic year is also recommended.

For the 2025 academic year, the guidance is to aim for at least 80 credits by the end of the second year and at least 120 credits by the end of the third year. The 104 credits mentioned in the progression guidance are a minimum; approximately 120 credits by the end of the third year is desirable for managing research and job-hunting activities in the fourth year.

Choosing your main and secondary courses

In the second year, you decide your main course and secondary course. For specialized course subjects, it is recommended that you mainly take the processing and control specialized subjects listed in the course allocation table.

Using the curriculum and progression tables

Plan your courses by comparing the subject groups in the course allocation table, the course codes attached to specialized course subjects, and the progression requirements table. When checking your graduation plan, pay particular attention to the graduation requirements section of the progression requirements table and earn the credits needed for graduation with sufficient margin.
