Routes to a Doctoral Degree
A doctoral degree may be awarded through completion of the doctoral course or, in certain cases, through dissertation review and confirmation of academic ability.
Doctoral-course completion route
For the 2026 academic year, a doctoral degree is awarded to a person who completes the doctoral course in accordance with the University Graduate School Regulations.
Dissertation-based route without doctoral-course completion
A doctoral degree may also be awarded to a person who is not a doctoral-course graduate if they submit a doctoral dissertation to the University, pass the dissertation review and confirmation of academic ability, and are recognized as equal or superior in character and academic ability to a person who has been enrolled in the latter stage of the doctoral program for the prescribed period and earned at least the prescribed credits in the prescribed major subjects.
