Applying Excess Credits to Teacher-Licence Requirements
This page explains how excess credits and Category 4 credits may be counted toward other teacher-licence credit requirements, including the 30-credit requirement for specialised subject courses.
How Category 4 and excess credits affect other requirements
All university-established courses in Categories 1, 2, and 3 must be completed. Category 4 courses are not compulsory, but credits earned from Category 4 courses may be included in the required credit total. When this happens, the required number of credits for Category 2 specialised subject courses is reduced by the same number of Category 4 credits earned. In addition, when the number of university-established credits in a category exceeds the statutory minimum, the excess credits may be applied toward the statutory minimum for Category 4.
30-credit requirement for specialised subject courses
You must earn at least 30 credits from courses covering specialised matters related to the subject, including all designated shaded courses. Up to 2 of these 30 credits may be replaced by credits from university-established independent courses. If you use this substitution, the required number of specialised subject-course credits is reduced by the number of independent-course credits used. For example, earning 2 credits from independent courses means that you must earn at least 28 credits from specialised subject courses.
