Teaching Licence Credit Requirements
This page explains the credit requirements, category rules, substitutions, and counting rules for teaching licences in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
Credits required for teaching licences
In addition to the credits required for graduation from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, students must earn credits in subjects related to the licence subject area and in teacher-training subjects. For a junior-high-school teaching licence, all prescribed credits in categories [1], [2], [3], and [4] must be earned.
Minimum credits and specified subjects
The statutory minimum for category [3] is 27 credits for a junior-high-school first-class licence and 23 credits for a high-school first-class licence. When all subjects required by the university are completed, the corresponding earned-credit totals are 29 and 25 credits. For subjects independently specified by the university, the statutory minimum is 4 credits for a junior-high-school first-class licence and 12 credits for a high-school first-class licence.
For teaching-licence acquisition, students must also earn 8 credits in total from the subjects specified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology: 2 credits in the Japanese Constitution, 2 credits in physical education, 2 credits in foreign-language communication, and 2 credits in mathematics, data utilization, artificial intelligence, or the operation of information devices.
High-school licence substitutions and category [4]
For a high-school teaching licence, all prescribed credits in categories [1], [2], and [3] must be earned. Category [4] does not necessarily have to be completed if the combined number of credits earned in categories [2] and [3] is at least 59.
For the high-school Type 1 teaching licence in Industrial Studies, credits in category [3], concerning the basic understanding of education and related subjects, may be replaced with the same number of credits in category [2], concerning the subject and teaching methods for the subject, under the supplementary provision of the licensing law currently in effect.
How subject-related credits are counted
Subject education methods are counted only for the corresponding subject. Subject teaching-method credits are not counted as high-school credits.
