Subject-Specific Credit Requirements and Permitted Substitutions

This page explains the required credits for subject-specific matters, including mandatory shaded courses and the credits that may be replaced by independently established university subjects.

Required credits for subject-specific matters

The required credits must be earned from the courses listed in the subject-specific matters table, and all shaded courses must be included.

The supplied curriculum materials show both 20-credit and 30-credit requirements for subject-specific matters. The applicable amount depends on the academic year, faculty, and table that applies to the student. A 30-credit requirement is stated for the 2026 System Design Engineering Faculty, and 30-credit requirements are also stated in materials for the Engineering Faculty and the Second Division of the Engineering Faculty. A 20-credit requirement is stated in other supplied materials for subject-specific matters.

When independently established university subjects may replace credits

Some curriculum materials allow credits from independently established university subjects to replace part of the 30-credit subject-specific requirement. When this option applies, the required subject-specific credits are reduced by the number of replacement credits. For example, applying 2 replacement credits reduces the subject-specific requirement to at least 28 credits, while applying 5 replacement credits reduces it to at least 25 credits.

The permitted replacement amount differs by scope. The materials state a maximum of 2 replacement credits for the 2025 and 2026 Second Division of the Engineering Faculty and for one 2026 Engineering Faculty requirement. A separate 2025 Engineering Faculty requirement permits up to 5 replacement credits.

For the 2025 System Design Engineering Faculty, credits earned in the three specified courses when obtaining a high school teaching licence reduce the 30-credit subject-specific requirement by the number of credits earned.
