Academic Eligibility for the Higher Education Study Support System
This page explains who the system supports, the academic criteria for new and continuing students, and how to calculate the standard number of earned credits.
Who the system supports
The Higher Education Study Support System is for students who have difficulty continuing their studies for financial reasons. It provides grants-type scholarships and reductions or exemptions of tuition and other fees.
Academic criteria for new entrants
For new entrants, you must meet either of the following academic criteria: a high school grade-point average of 3.5 or higher; or a confirmed willingness to study with the goal of becoming independent and active in society in the future. This willingness must be confirmed through documents such as a study plan.
Academic criteria for continuing students
For students who are not new entrants, you must meet either of the following academic criteria: your cumulative GPA ranking must be in the top half of your grade-level ranking within your department or academic group; or you must have earned at least the standard number of credits and have a confirmed willingness to study with the goal of becoming independent and active in society in the future. This willingness must be confirmed through documents such as a study plan.
Calculating the standard number of earned credits
The standard number of earned credits is calculated as follows: graduation-required credits ÷ 4 years × the academic year level in the previous academic year.
Academic criterion for the Future Science Faculty
For the Future Science Faculty, the academic criterion is that you must meet either criterion 1 or criterion 2 in the category applicable to you: new entrant or student who is not a new entrant.
