Planning Your Architecture Studies by Field and Year
This guide explains the recommended progression through the Architecture Department, from broad foundational study in Years 1 and 2 to focused study, research, and design work in Years 3 and 4.
Years 1 and 2: Build broad foundations
In approximately Years 1 and 2, take the required courses prepared in each field as the main part of your coursework. These courses are designed to help you acquire broad foundational knowledge of architecture.
Years 3 and 4: Focus on your preferred field
As you progress into Years 3 and 4, plan your studies so that you place greater emphasis on the field you want to study in more depth. The fields are Planning and Design, Structures, Environment and Building Services, History and Urban Studies, and Residential Environment and Interior Design. In Year 4, produce research or design work suited to your chosen area of specialization.
How to plan your courses
Before making your study plan, use the curriculum diagram on the following page to understand how each field is structured and which courses can be taken in each academic year. Then plan your coursework so that you take the relevant courses for your preferred field appropriately. Required courses must be completed in the academic year assigned to them.
