Changing Between the General-Student and Working-Adult Curricula

This page explains when students may apply to change curricula, the academic and employment requirements, leave-of-absence conditions, and the limit on curriculum changes.

Basic eligibility and limit on changes

Students who wish to change from the general-student curriculum to the working-adult curriculum must meet the working-adult curriculum's affiliation requirements as well as the requirements stated here. In principle, a curriculum change may be applied for only once during enrollment, in either direction: from the general-student curriculum to the working-adult curriculum or from the working-adult curriculum to the general-student curriculum.

When you can apply and which courses must be completed

You may apply to change from the general-student curriculum to the working-adult curriculum when advancing to the second year or when advancing to the third year. For an application at advancement to the second year, you must have completed all required courses assigned to the first year. This requirement does not apply at admission to transfer students. For an application at advancement to the third year, you must have completed all required courses assigned through the second year. This requirement also does not apply at admission to transfer students.

Employment and leave-of-absence requirements

For an application at advancement to the second year, you must continue working for a company or other organization from the second year onward. For an application at advancement to the third year, you must continue working for a company or other organization from the third year onward. In either case, you must not have previously taken a leave of absence or similar leave. However, a leave taken for work-related reasons or for childbirth or child-rearing may be permitted.

Request and approval

A student who holds the qualification specified in Article 4 and belongs to the general-student curriculum may request a change to the working-adult curriculum. The change may be approved after deliberation by the Faculty of Engineering, Division II Operations Committee.
