Leave of Absence: Duration and Extensions

This page explains the permitted length of a leave of absence, when annual leave may be requested, the academic year limit, and when an extension may be allowed.

Semester and annual leave options

For the 2026 academic year at the Tokyo Senju Campus, Faculty of Systems Design and Technology, a leave of absence is taken one semester at a time, with each semester lasting six months. For the 2025 academic year at the Tokyo Senju Campus, Faculty of Engineering, a leave of absence is also six months per semester. During the application period for the first semester, students may apply for leave covering the full academic year, including both the first and second semesters. In this Faculty of Engineering scope, the leave period is not counted toward the number of years of enrollment. At the Saitama Hatoyama Campus, Faculty of Science and Technology, for the 2026 academic year, leave is also available for six months per semester, with an annual leave application covering both semesters permitted only during the first-semester application period.

Leave is limited to the permitted academic year

For the 2026 academic year, leave at the Tokyo Senju Campus is limited to the academic year for which permission was granted in the Faculty of Future Science and the Faculty of Systems Design and Technology. In the Faculty of Engineering at the same campus, leave is likewise limited to the academic year for which permission was granted.

Possible extensions for special circumstances

For the 2025 academic year, an extension may be permitted upon application when special circumstances are recognized. This applies to the Faculty of Science and Technology at the Saitama Hatoyama Campus, the Second Division Faculty of Engineering at the Tokyo Senju Campus, and the Faculty of Future Science at the Tokyo Senju Campus. In each of these scopes, the leave is otherwise limited to the academic year for which permission was granted.
