Credit Recognition When Changing Faculties or Departments
Learn how liberal-education, human-sciences, English, foundational, and specialized-education credits are recognized after a faculty or department transfer.
General transfer and department-change rules
Credits are generally recognized through course correspondence. For transfers from the Faculty of Engineering Second Division to the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Science and Technology, or the School of System Design and Technology, human-sciences and English courses are recognized through course correspondence. Engineering foundation courses—including workshops, mathematics, natural science and technology, and information—are also recognized through course correspondence. Specialized-education courses are recognized through course correspondence using the credit value of the destination faculty, regardless of the year in which the course is assigned. The recognized grade is RS, RA, RB, or RC, although the destination department may assign RN.
For transfers among the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Science and Technology, and the School of System Design and Technology, specialized-education courses are recognized using the destination faculty's credit value, regardless of the assigned year. The recognized grade is RS, RA, RB, or RC, although the destination department may assign RN.
For a department change within the Faculty of Engineering, within the School of Science and Technology, or within the School of System Design and Technology, common-education courses are recognized through course correspondence regardless of the assigned year. Specialized-education courses are recognized through course correspondence using the destination department's credit value, regardless of the assigned year. The recognized grade is RS, RA, RB, or RC, although the destination department may assign RN.
Liberal-education credits
For the 2026 transfer cases covered here among the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Science and Technology, and the School of System Design and Technology, liberal-education courses—human sciences, English, natural sciences, and hands-on workshops—are recognized through course correspondence regardless of the assigned year. The recognized grade is S, A, B, or C, although the destination department may assign RN.
For a transfer from the Faculty of Engineering Second Division to one of those three faculties, the liberal-education courses are recognized regardless of the assigned year using the destination faculty's credit value. The recognized grade is RS, RA, RB, or RC, although the destination department may assign RN.
For a department change within the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Science and Technology, or the School of System Design and Technology, liberal-education courses are recognized through course correspondence regardless of the assigned year. The recognized grade is S, A, B, or C, although the destination department may assign RN.
Specialized-education credits
For the 2026 transfer cases covered here, specialized-education courses are recognized through course correspondence using the credit value of the destination faculty, regardless of the assigned year. The recognized grade is RS, RA, RB, or RC, although the destination department may assign RN. This rule also applies to transfers from the Faculty of Engineering Second Division to the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Science and Technology, or the School of System Design and Technology.
Human-sciences courses from the Faculty of Engineering Second Division
When transferring from the Faculty of Engineering Second Division to the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Science and Technology, or the School of System Design and Technology, human-sciences courses in the technical-culture and global-culture fields are recognized through course correspondence. Other human-sciences field courses are recognized comprehensively.
