Restricted Work Involving Dangerous Machinery, Materials, and Environments

The restricted-job list identifies work involving dangerous machinery, construction, driving, hazardous substances, elevated locations, and other harmful conditions.

Machinery and hazardous substances

Restricted work includes operating presses, drilling machines, lathes, cutting machines, and other automatic machinery because of the risk of accidents. Handling high-voltage equipment, high-pressure gas, and other hazardous materials is also restricted, including assistant work. Handling harmful substances such as pesticides and other toxic chemicals, including work such as plating and termite control, is restricted because it is considered harmful to human health.

Construction, transport, and elevated work

The restricted work list includes civil engineering and waterworks site work; work at construction sites, including demolition and clearing building debris; driving cars or motorcycles; and delivering heavy items of 30 kg or more by bicycle. It also includes outdoor work at heights of two floors or more, such as window cleaning and equipment installation, work requiring a helmet, and work on railway tracks or busy roads, including surveying, road-line marking, and traffic control. These types of work are associated with risks such as falling objects, falls, traffic accidents, and other serious hazards.

Harmful working environments and temperatures

Work in environments with significant dust, powder, harmful gases, or noise is restricted. Work in particularly high or low temperatures is also restricted because these conditions are considered potentially harmful to human health.
