Graduate School Advancement Special Scholarship: Selection and Award Timing

This page explains when selection takes place, how candidates are recommended, and when the scholarship is awarded after graduate enrollment.

When selection takes place

Scholarship selection procedures are conducted in June of the student's fourth undergraduate year. For the Future Science, Engineering, Systems Design and Engineering Division II faculties in Academic Year 2026, and the Science and Technology faculty in Academic Years 2025 and 2026, the scholarship is recruited and selected during the fourth year. The same June timing is also specified for the Engineering, Systems Design and Engineering Division II faculties in Academic Years 2025 and 2026.

How candidates are selected and recommended

The scholarship is a university-funded benefit intended to support academically excellent undergraduate students who plan to enter a master's programme at the university. Each department or academic system selects scholarship candidates and recommends them to the chair of the graduate school that the student will enter. The graduate school committee then conducts its selection, and the graduate school chair recommends scholarship candidates to the university president. After deliberation by the University Coordination Liaison Conference, the president decides who receives the scholarship.

When the scholarship is awarded

Under the stated procedure, recruitment and selection take place during the student's fourth undergraduate year, and scholarship candidates are decided at that stage. The scholarship is paid after a candidate passes the university's internal recommendation entrance examination for the master's programme and enrolls in the university's master's programme in the following academic year.
