Study Duration and Enrollment Limits

This page explains the standard four-year study period, the four- to eight-year enrollment range, and special rules for leave of absence, study abroad, and exceeding the maximum period.

Standard period of study

The prescribed or standard period of study is four years. This applies to the 2025 Future Science Faculty and Science and Technology Faculty, and to the 2026 Future Science Faculty, Science and Technology Faculty, and System Design and Technology Faculty in the specified campuses.

Required enrollment period for graduation

For the specified 2025 and 2026 faculties and campuses, graduation requires a total enrollment period of at least four years and no more than eight years. This rule is stated for the 2025 Future Science Faculty, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering (Evening Division), and System Design and Technology Faculty, and for the 2026 Faculty of Engineering (Evening Division) and Future Science Faculty.

Additional rules affecting the enrollment period

For the 2025 and 2026 Science and Technology Faculty at the Saitama Hatoyama Campus, a student must be enrolled for one year in each year of study and for at least four years in total. The stated maximum is eight years, but the enrollment period is governed by a different rule when the student takes a leave of absence. In the 2025 Faculty of Engineering at the Tokyo Senju Campus, exceeding the maximum enrollment period of eight years is subject to expulsion. Students admitted by transfer or readmitted are governed by separate provisions. In the same 2025 Faculty of Engineering scope, an approved study-abroad period may be counted toward the prescribed period of study, up to a maximum of one year.
