Courses and Credits Required for a Teaching Licence
This guide explains which courses are mandatory for a teaching licence, how shaded courses differ from graduation requirements, and how required credits vary by licence subject and academic scope.
Shaded courses are mandatory for the licence
Courses shaded in the subject-related specialized-course tables contain general and comprehensive content and must be completed for the teaching licence. This requirement is separate from the required, elective, and free-course classifications used for progression and graduation requirements. For the Faculty of Engineering, Evening Division, at Tokyo Senju Campus in 2026, students must generally complete subject-related specialized courses offered by their own department; shaded courses must be taken from their own department.
Required credits for subject-related courses
The supplied requirements include different credit totals depending on the licence and academic scope. For a middle-school teaching licence, students must earn at least 20 credits from the courses listed in the relevant table, including all shaded courses. The supplied 2025 requirements for the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering, Evening Division, and the Faculty of Future Science state that students must earn at least 30 credits from the relevant subject-related specialized courses, also including all shaded courses.
Courses required for obtaining a teaching licence
Students seeking a teaching licence must complete courses related to teaching and the other required courses specified for the licence. The shaded courses in the subject-related specialized-course table are mandatory for the licence, regardless of the required, elective, or free-course classification shown for progression and graduation requirements.
Requirements differ by licence subject
Under Category 2, covering courses related to the school subject and subject teaching methods, the courses and required credit total differ according to the subject on the teaching licence. Students must earn the required credits for their desired licence subject according to the applicable table. The supplied requirements also state that the course-allocation table for the student's department applies.
