Eligibility for Taking Upper-Year Courses

Upper-year courses are generally restricted to students in the assigned year or a lower year, but specific exceptions and approval requirements vary by campus, faculty, department, and academic year.

Courses assigned to an upper year are generally not available. For information about upper-year courses that may be available, ask your affiliated academic unit.

Saitama Hatoyama Campus — Faculty of Science and Technology, 2026

You may take courses from your curriculum year that are assigned to your own year or, in principle, to a lower year. Courses assigned to an upper year are generally not permitted, except in special cases. High-performing students may be allowed to take upper-year courses based on a decision by their academic unit and the dean.

Tokyo Senju Campus — Faculty of Future Science, 2026

If a third-year student met the evaluation criteria in the previous semester for permission to register beyond the course-registration limit, the student may take fourth-year specialized courses in their own department after obtaining approval from the course instructor and the department head. In addition, when the conditions established by the department are met, enrollment is limited to specialized education courses assigned to the student's own department. A newly enrolled first-year student may not take a course whose assigned year is shown as “12.”

Tokyo Senju Campus — Faculty of Engineering, Division II, 2025

A course must be assigned to your current year or a lower year. Courses assigned to a higher year are not permitted.
