How to Respond to a Dangerously Intoxicated Friend

Learn how to care for a friend who is severely intoxicated, prevent choking, and recognize symptoms that require an ambulance.

Provide Immediate Care

Never leave a severely intoxicated friend alone. Loosen their clothing to help them stay comfortable, cover them with a blanket or similar item to prevent their body temperature from falling, and give them fluids.

Prevent Choking While They Vomit

If the intoxicated friend is asleep, keep them lying on their side while they vomit to prevent choking on vomit.

When to Call an Ambulance

Call an ambulance if the intoxicated friend has a low body temperature, rapid and shallow breathing, only occasional breathing, or does not respond at all when shaken and spoken to.
