Class Cancellations During Strikes, Disasters, and Other Emergencies

This page explains when classes are cancelled because of transport strikes, natural disasters, or other unforeseen situations, including differences by campus, faculty, and academic year.

When classes are cancelled

For the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Future Science, Second Division of the Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of System Design and Technology at Tokyo Senju Campus, classes are cancelled when an unforeseen situation occurs, such as a transport strike or natural disaster. The 2025 and 2026 rules for the Second Division of the Faculty of Engineering state this cancellation rule. The 2025 rule for the Faculty of Future Science and the 2025 and 2026 rules for the Faculty of System Design and Technology state the same principle; the Faculty of System Design and Technology guidance refers students to Chapter 2, Section 6.

For the Faculty of Science and Technology at Saitama Hatoyama Campus in 2025, classes are cancelled when an unforeseen situation results from a natural disaster such as an earthquake, typhoon, or heavy snow. Further details are provided on page 12 of the relevant document.

One 2025 rule for the Second Division of the Faculty of Engineering also states that classes are held as usual when only another private railway service is suspended because of a strike or similar disruption. This statement appears alongside the general cancellation rule for unforeseen situations.

Possible additional measures in an emergency

For the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Future Science at Tokyo Senju Campus in 2025, and for the Second Division of the Faculty of Engineering in 2026, measures for classes during transport strikes, natural disasters, and similar events generally follow the stated standards. However, different class measures may be implemented depending on the circumstances of an emergency.
